Scott and Jenny made a trip to the Denali Highway over Labor Day weekend, 2002. Theoretically we were ptarmigan hunting. Theoretically, we were skunked. The locals were polite enough not to laugh <grin>
The Denali Highway is some 120 odd miles of gravel "road" running east-west between the tiny towns of Paxson and Cantwell. The road can be intimidating, but if you don't do anything remarkably stupid, and drive slowly, you'll probably be fine. The Geo made several passes at the Denali highway, and never had any problems.
You'll generally see a LOT of wildlife, everything from ermine to tundra swan, to caribou. And theoretically, ptarmigan. Ptasty Ptarmigan.
