We made our annual pilgrimage across the Denali highway over Labor Day weekend.

Jenny has been going up there in August since 1993, but this is only our third year going up together. Jenny introduced Scott to the highway, so showing him the sights and hunting for ptarmigan has been really special.

In this photo, Scott is holding the second and third ptarmigan he shot 08/30/2003, around 7 in the morning. Jenny didn't get any! (although she did follow a couple into the bushes only to have them walk away before she got around to bringing the .410 into position <grimace>)

Note their plumage is in transition from summer brown to winter white. When we found them, they were flying down the road ahead of us and all we saw were white bird butts flying away from us.

Scott says his hunting went better when he remembered to aim instead of pointing and firing...

bangity-bangity-aim!-bangity-BIRD!
