Our chicken run is a wreck of mud and flood. Most of the backyard is under a couple feet of snow.
The chickens are disgruntled.
I carried them to the front yard.
Glee!

I made quark – a simple soft cheese. Milk, culture, rennet and time. Took about 20 minutes of hands on and 30 hours hanging around time.
It’s creamy and a little tangy.
Not bad for commercial milk.
Power to the house was fine at lunch today. When we got home after EKAs well-baby exam at 8 PM it was wonky. No dining or kitchen lights. No bathroom lights or laundry room or garage. But hall light and living room and entry fine. And so on thru the house. Flipped the breakers, no good. Then a vague memory from our first break up in the house.
Half power.
The power coming into the house has a moisture inflicted glitch that is causing only half the stuff in the house to get power. When this happened way back when they installed an above ground line in a big honkin’ space tube (we were watching a LOT of Stargate).
We called in the problem around 8:50 PM, checked the master breaker as requested and called back near 9:20 PM to let them no it was definitely wonky. We told them we did not consider it an emergency, that our furnace and fridge (but not chest freezer) still had power.
They dispatched anyway and two very nice gentleman are outside right now installing another big honkin’ space tube!
So far EKA is sleeping through the noise…

Had a good discussion with Dr MacDonald and Cara, Bings ‘back team’ at Vet Specialists of Alaska
It is looking very very promising for Bing to resume herding in about another four weeks. This is terrific news.
Here are my notes from the conversation…
-Jenny
Begin forwarded message:
Bing is doing well neurologically. His deficits are pretty much gone. There is a slightly delayed response on his right side but it is very mild and not consistent. He could keep that for the rest of his life and be of no concern. He is doing very well in rehab, recommend continue with twice a week for another four weeks. To resume sheep herding first need to continue strengthening his lumber and core muscles. Over the next four weeks perform the weave exercises as discussed (open weaves with a minimum of curve progressing to mostly or fully closed weaves over four weeks). The progressively tighter weaves over the next four weeks will strengthen his core and lumber muscles. This will help protect his back and discs. At this point we know he has a predisposition for problems however with strengthening his muscles and care we can give him his best chance to continue herding.
Bing’s original injury took place 02/27/2013. He will work on strengthening his core over the next four weeks. We’ll do a final check with Dr. MacDonald around 05/10/2013 then if all looks good we’ll (gently) resume herding.
Really? It’s APRIL for gawd sake
On the other hand the crocus are blooming. Despite the deep snow just a few feet away.
Growing up there was lots of music. Mom plays the violin so there was the baroque orchestra, string quartet, and musicals while she was at Sonoma State University, and later on she was in Santa Rosa Symphony.
I don’t know how many times I saw the Pirates of Penzance but it was many. I loved it!
The Anchorage Opera is closing their 2013 season with Pirates of Penzance this weekend. Scott is home with Elizabeth and I am at opening night.
I haven’t heard the music for years but I’m finding I remember most of the words and songs, some thirty years later.
Delightful!
