More birds

I ate lunch at Cuddy park today. Last month the ravens were abundant and deep in mating season. Love how thge males puff their head feathers into ears and court the ladies.

Today there was the usual absurd duck abundance gleefully dabbling in the fresh spring melt, a flock of delinquent gulls, and a lone rather out of place raven.

Sorry buddy – time to bail on Anchorage. The neighborhood has gone to pot.

Buddies

Bing came with me from p/t to pick up Elizabeth.

Bing curled up next to her car seat as soon as she was buckled in.

She gave a squeal of pure joy when she saw him in the car. As we were driving I could hear rustling and laughter.

Bing was giving her kisses, and she was patting his ear.

Oh good buddies.

Bing also kept a close watch on her tonight while she was practicing her walking with the assistance of a rolling chair…

April Fool

Kate is clever and has a twisted sense of humor.

She celebrated April Fools day by getting into Elizabeth’s “just in case” shelf.

She gnawed open a can of oatmeal cereal and distributed the contents across both couches, thru the living room, a scattering down the hall and into the dining area. She polished off her joyful snack in her kennel grinding the sticky powder into her coat and the dog blankets.

I’ve swept and mopped the floors, banished the kennel outside, Kate outside, slipcovers into the wash. There are a pile of throw rugs left to de-powder.

I love our dogs, I love our dogs, I love our dogs….

Bird!

Heard then saw the first gull this year. Bittersweet – they are harbingers of spring but also mean ravens will soon depart.

Spring sheep

Bing continues with crate rest so Kate did some herding today. It was fairly warm (high 30’s? Low 40’s?) and the sheep were cooperative so Kate did well. As usually, Elizabeth laughed and enjoyed being out with the animals. Our friend Laura promised to make E her own stock stick in a year or two!

We finished the day by visiting the lambs.

Elizabeth was entranced when a curious bold lamb nibbled the toe of her snow suit.

Bing gave everyone a full inspection and whuffled up all the good stock smells when we got home.

Memory

I have an old movie memory.

It was 1984 and my big sister took me to see The Karate Kid at a theater (possibly what is now the Summerfield?) in Rincon Valley.

We stopped at the near by Round Table and got Minestrone soup and some kind of sandwich (I know, weird choices from a pizza place).

We snuck the food into the theater, probably in her purse. Then we waited until the theater was dark and quiet and the opening credits were rolling.

As quietly as we could we pulled out the food and unwrapped it amongst crinkling and muffled delighted giggles. I remember the rich fragrance of the soup drifting out over the theater.

Best movie memory ever.

Thank you sis.

Bing Underwater Treadmill

A few folks had asked how Bing was doing.

Bing continues to recover from his herniated disc (2/27/2013). He is still on crate rest and leashed potty time. 2 five minute walks a day.
Unlimited belly rubs.
He began his second week of physical therapy today. This is his third session (3/25/2013). He did about 1/2 mile on the underwater treadmill.

His physical therapist, Cara at Veterinary Specialists of Alaska, has a nice rapport with him. He gives her kisses.

I’m glad we have access to such a good facility.

I posted the videos on YouTube…

A little lunch

Tofu, peas, polenta. She ate all the polenta first and dug around in the peas looking for more. She devoured the tofu next. This is an organic variety from Fred Meyers. She prefers the locally produced tofu I buy at the Wednesday Farmers Market, produced by Alaska Sprouts. She was pretty full by the time she got to the peas but she made a heavy dent in them. Good girl.

Kate is under the table.

We also went to the dog show held at the Egan today (tomorrow too). We cheered on our Cardigan friends. Elizabeth clapped for Chickadee (first show) and Talia (who went Best of Breed and earned her Championship with that win).
Elizabeth met lots of nice dogs, though by far her favorite was Chickadee. They bonded over kisses and cuddles.

Dahlias

I bought three dahlia tubers (bulbs?) from The Persistent Farmer at the Center Farmers Market.

I haven’t grown dahlias before and am looking forward to learning about them.

I asked Rob, the farmer, to choose for me as I didn’t know anything about them.

They are:

And

Plus I installed a storm door so we can enjoy the spring sunshine without the chill. A bargain (<$20 at the ReStore)
