Alaska Primary

I was voter #38 at my polling place this afternoon. New district, new polling location. Probably going to be low turnout with all those factors.

I beat Scott to the polls .

Zebra grab

Tonight Elizabeth practiced rolling from her back onto her left side. She was reaching for and grabbing a zebra rattle. She likes gnawing on it. It was a quiet evening.

I am the giant baby!

I weighed Elizabeth Katherine before her bath last night.

13 pounds, 6 ounces.

She will soon be too long for her bassinet. She can roll from front to back. We expect her to roll from back to front any day now. She likes to sit upright facing outwards so she can see her world. She gives every appearance of enjoyment when Bing and Kate lick her face (yes, we let the dogs lick her… Frankly couldn’t prevent it if we wanted to).

She is working on grasping. She has serious kicky legs.

She is as entrancing as ever.

Flying

We are well if sleep deprived. Elizabeth is a very good and nearly always happy.

Summer has flown by even more quickly than usual.

Life has returned to our new normal with Scott and I both back to work and EKA in a great in home daycare. She brings us great joy. Developmentally EKA will be behind for awhile. She is working on grasping with her little hands. She likes music and dancing in our arms. She goes sheep herding with me on Saturdays and laughs when I run with her in her Moby sling. Scott can make her giggle and coo and grin with an ease that is beautiful.

Bing and Kate are awesome. Busy herding summer for both. Bing ROCKS – he came in second place for Started both days of the July AKC trial, with Suzanne handling.

There was a Louis Awerbuck class and a caribou for Scott.

House news – we ripped out the carpet, installed Costco (Harmonics brand) Vineyard Cherry laminate flooring. We ripped out the fireplace.

We ripped out the 2×4 divider. Some work left to do.

Time is precious and scarce.

Day of birth

Scott and Elizabeth were both born on a Friday. I was born on a Tuesday. What day of the week was your natal day?

Mondays child is fair of face,
Tuesdays child is full of grace,
Wednesdays child is full of woe,
Thursdays child has far to go,
Fridays child is loving and giving,
Saturdays child works hard for his living,
And the child that is born on the Sabbath day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

Alarmed chickens

This weekend we picked up a couple of meat bunnies from our friends. They are nine weeks old, very sweet tempered, around six pounds. We didn’t have time to process them  this weekend so we secured in a shady part of the yard.

The chickens are most alarmed by these interlopers. Half  an hour after the bunnies settled in the hens were still fluttering about alarm-calling!

Here is a photo of a Wyandotte mix with head high and stiff  bodied, clucking and strutting for all she’s worth. Guess there won’t be any eggs for a day or two (my girls take a laying break when they get wound up).

We are looking forward to seeing how these bunnies dress out. I feel a little bad because they have such nice temperaments. We will cook something  special with them.

The bunnies aren’t phased by much. Not even hysterical corgis.

Later in the day I escorted the dogs to the back to do their business (neighbor kids  playing basketball in street out front which makes my herding dogs  NUTS).  They found the bunnies and investigated. Bing was mildly  curious but unimpressed. Kate stared at them hard, very stiff. Then a  bunny moved and Kate jumped about a foot in startlement. She pillated  all the way down her back, barked crazily, and danced back and forth  slung low to the ground while, get this, TREMBLING! Bunnies watched  her and moved around their cage calmly.

I laughed at my poor frightened Kate I’m ashamed to say. I took pity  on her and picked her up and carried her away. She was too wigged by  the bunnies to come when called.

Funniest thing I think I’ve ever seen her do.

She had her revenge that evening.  One of the Wyandotte mixes was  feeling unwell. Hunch backed, eyes half closed, you know the drill. I caught her and checked her over. Weight a little low, vent in good  shape, poops ok. No prolapse, not eggbound. Crop distended and stinky  breath.  So I held her upside down and massaged her crop until it  emptied. Lot of foulness came out. Hen perked up right away so I’ll  just keep an eye on her. It looked like she’d gotten into some  styrofoam. (it insulates the house walls below ground level, they dig  it up and eat it whenever they get a chance).

What does that have to do with Kate? She found the chicken puke and  worked it deep into her ruff and coat. Then she showed Bing where it  was. He also annointed himself.

Then they came found me. Gaaagh.

Cold outdoor baths for both dogs. They were not amused.

Bing, Summer 2011 trial

Summer herding trial 2011, Bing

A few folks asked to see our guys in their herding splendour.
Here is a clip of Bing at either an AHBA or ASCA trial last summer.

This is about 5 MB so it may take a bit to open.

Colony Days and other fun

We’ve had lots going on with Elizabeth Katherine and Alaskan summer.

Honda engine is being repaired instead of replaced – woo hoo! I will be without a vehicle for a couple weeks but that is not a great trial. Bus and walking will do for most needs. Elizabeth Katherine and I took the bus on Friday to run an errand – no sweat.

Colony Days was last weekend. We went sheep herding then boogied over to Palmer. We caught most of the parade and ate a lot of delicious food. Sweetie Pies – pumpkin, strawberry rhubarb, blueberry, raspberry. We ate the raspberry piping hot while waiting in line for our tamales (one pork, one smoked brisket). There was some tasty spillage. We also encountered our first yarn bombing which was tremendously silly and cool. Trees were festooned with hand knit articles in an explosion of color and texture. My favorite was the witch legs discreetly peeking from beneath some bushes. We wrapped up with coffee at Vagabond Blues.

Sheep herding – Katie’s got her mojo back. She wasn’t much interested in herding over the winter (with the cold temps who can really blame her) but she was ON this saturday. She gave me some very nice aways and go byes, then sassed the ram too much and got charged. She was more circumspect after that. Her fetches need some improvement. We did not attempt any driving. Overall I was delighted with her work. On Kate’s second go around I loaded Elizabeth Katherine into her Moby sling and took her out sheepherding for the first time. Elizabeth Katherine is  a natural and took to the activity like a champ <grin>. The Moby sling worked fabulous at holding Elizabeth Katherine secure and safe on my chest. Kate is calm enough with the sheep that we were able to get a good feel for how practical herding with Elizabeth Katherine will be – totally doable. Suzanne herded Bing for me, I will be far too slow for a while. Bing was mightily distracted on his first go around – I made the mistake of herding with Kate in the adjacent arena simultaneously. Totally unfair to expect a novice dog like Bing to herd well under those circumstances. His next go was significantly better. He works so very nicely for Suzanne. The lambs are a real pleasure to work this year. They’ve had enough time to grow up a little and don’t look like the yummy little gyros that they did last year.

Garden – potatoes are in, nothing else. Set up a red neck irrigation system in the backyard using an electric timer, 4 way outlet, and soaker hoses. This will also top up the chicken water for us several times a day. If we get the rest of the plants into the ground I have some small hope we will have a modest harvest in the fall despite the distraction and extra work that EKA brings to our family.

Kate’s pups – several have gone to their new homes. Pistol, the pup we fell in love with, will be living with a very nice family in Palmer. They may be interested in herding so we will have an opportunity to see if the herding instinct came out in this breeding. That would be so very exciting if it did!

Elizabeth Katherine – She continues to be a delight and a source of deep fatigue. We are working on resolving her anemia (not unusual for preemies). Went to Providence to have a blood draw and swung through Maternity to say hello to our nurses. She is up to 8 pounds 15 ounces. We work on tummy time daily, and finding thumbs so she will have something to help soothe when her pacifier is unavailable or dropped. She has outgrown her early clothing. Fortunately there are many outfits for her current and future sizes! Sleep is for the weak and childless.

Bing is devoted to Elizabeth Katherine. Kate thinks diapers are keen. Today Bing hopped up on the couch to be next to Joanne, holding his baby. He sits near her swing, and kisses her when she is having tummy time (and at any other opportunity). He gets very concerned when she cries and crowds us to see whats going on with her girl. I am so proud and pleased with our very fine corgi boy.

Chickens – no chicks yet. Cross your fingers for white chanteclers. The two partridge chanteclers (about 8 years old, from our original chick batch in the first year) and their Wyandotte half breed offspring (about 4 years old, I think) are happy that it is summer. They enjoy dust bathing in the garden and in a shallow impression under a cottonwood stump. They nip the tips off the grass. I like watching them. They are all laying and we are getting eggs regularly despite their age.

Cardigan tail woe

Kate was wishing she was a Pembroke earlier today.

I was juggling the dogs out of the Subaru at Suzanne’s this morning. Kate was diddling around sniffing with her tail in the air as she exited the car instead of moving over with Bing as asked.

Gravity struck and pulled the door closed and latched about 2/3 down her tail. Wailing ensued and Katie yelped too. Got the door open quickly.

No broken skin. Bone doesn’t appear broken. She herded very well and was wagging her tail.

She’s a little tender but seems okay.

Sometimes tails aren’t all they’re cracked up to be!

She is moving away from the door when asked now…
